The airline launched the appeal across its pan-European network of flights spanning more than 30 countries, in response to the worsening situation for the children who are caught up in the current crisis and as an extension of its wider ‘Change for Good’ partnership with UNICEF.
All of the money raised through the appeal is helping UNICEF to provide vital support to the hundreds of thousands of children both remaining in Syria and also those struggling to survive in refugee camps in the five neighbouring countries. This support includes providing safe drinking water, essential vaccines, nutrition, clothing and protection.
The money collected from the donations is also helping UNICEF to give children who have had to flee their homes the chance to get back to school, continue their education and regain their childhood.
Just £2 will provide six children with school exercise books so they can continue their education
£5 will provide a family of seven in Syria with clean water for a week
Carolyn McCall, easyJet’s Chief Executive said:
""As the UK’s largest airline, we are in a very strong position to make a real difference to the lives of so many children in Syria and I’d like to thank our passengers for their continuing generosity and support in enabling us to do so via easyJet’s onboard collections.
""In just six weeks they have given a staggering amount – over £200,000 and we are really proud to be supporting UNICEF - one of the most well-known and well respected children’s organisations in the world. It’s great to see everyone at easyJet getting behind the partnership to ensure its success and really help UNICEF to make a difference.""
David Bull, UNICEF UK’s Executive Director said:
""As the Syria crisis enters its third year, a whole generation of children stands on a precipice and, without immediate help, risk becoming a ‘lost generation’. easyJet’s passengers have shown tremendous generosity in helping UNICEF provide life-saving care to keep the innocent children caught up in the Syrian crisis warm, safe and healthy at a time of desperate need. We are incredibly grateful for their kindness.""
As a dedicated partner, easyJet is committed to playing its part to help UNICEF’s work in this crisis and has also provided a number of seats for UNICEF staff and experts on flights to Jordan.
The Syria children’s emergency collection ran from Friday 1 February until Friday 15 March 2013 as part of easyJet and UNICEF’s wider ‘Change for Good’ partnership which launched in July 2012 in aid of UNICEF’s life-saving immunisation work.
