Manchester Pride and easyJet today launched a week of fringe events in the build-up to Pride weekend– with a high heel race through the city centre.

The ‘easyJet Skyhigh Race’ saw competitors slip into stilettos for a 60m dash down Canal street. After a close contest and a few tumbles Aaron Wilson was crowned winner with a giant orange shoe and free flights from easyJet.

Inspiration for the easyJet Skyhigh race came from a similar event in San Diego. The ‘Amazing high heel race’ attracts hundreds of participants annually and is run in support of the LGBT community.

Darren Adams, Deputy Chief Executive of Manchester Pride, said: ""It’s great to work with easyJet on such a fun event to set the tone of Pride 2013. Manchester has a reputation for being one of Britain’s most stylish cities and lots of people turned out to strut their stuff down Canal Street. It was a fierce contest and is something we hope will become a regular addition to Pride.""

Ali Gayward from easyJet, said: ""easyJet is proud to be the official sponsor of Manchester Pride and to get things started we’re launching the city’s first ever high heel race. The easyJet Skyhigh Race is an opportunity to get dressed up, have fun and leg it in your Louboutins to launch Pride 2013.""

easyJet is an official sponsor of Manchester Pride, the Big Weekend takes place from Friday 23 to Monday 26 August. Tens of thousands of people from across the UK and Europe will flock to Manchester's world-renowned Gay Village to celebrate the festival.
